More Dangerous Tourism: Brief Anthology of 'Tourist Horror' (II)

Since the moment that Johnathan Harker travelled to Transylvania we have seen all the dangers that one can face while travelling.

In august of 2010, we wrote "Dangerous Tourism: Brief Anthology of "Tourist Horror"". It is time to add some more titles to the list.

The Evil Dead (1981) and Evil Dead II (1987)

Sam Raimi, director of the original "The Hills Have Eyes" directed the three episodes of the Evil Dead Trilogy, the first two of which are clearly tourist horror classics, in the subgenre of "cabin in the woods".

Predator (1987)

The interesting thing about "Predator" is that, for once, we don't see a sadistic family with masks.

The Hills Have Eyes (1977) and The Hills Have Eyes (2006)

Another of sadistic families. Original by Sam Raimi. Remake by Alexandre Aja, the (in my opinion overrated) director of "Haute tension".

The Abandoned (2006)

From catalan director Nacho Cerdà, the story of a woman who travels to rural Russia.

El rey de la montaña (2007)

A guy is besieged by and unknown shooter in a forest. Really interesting but with a disappointing ending. It has been an obvious inspiration for "A Lonely Place To Die".

Eskalofrío (2008)

Another spanish production, this time about a boy who is light sensitive (reminds of "The Others"?).

The Shrine (2010)

Threee journalists discover an strange cult in Poland when looking for a missing backpacker. A low budget but watchable movie.

Jeepers Creepers (2001) and Jeepers Creepers II (2003)

The first "Jeepers Creepers" was a fine example of horror tourism. With a mix of "The Hitcher" and a monster movie, the results are quite enterntaining.

House of Wax (1953) and House of Wax (2005)

Another horror flick from a catalan director (also director of "The Orphan"), this time a remake from a 50s classic. If the original version had Vincent Price, the remake has Paris Hilton, which some may find very symptomatic. Despite this the movie can be watched without a yawn.

Vertige (2009)

My favourite french horror of the last years. Quite similar to escandinavian films like "Fritt Vilt" or "Rodvyr".

"Timber Falls" (2007)

A couple go camping in the mountains and meet a crazy family. Well, it is not the most original plot in the history of cinema, but the final result is not as boring as one could expect. Enjoyable.

Frontière(s) (2007)

Another french horror, this time more identified with new french horror ("Vertige", "La horde", etc.).

"A Lonely Place To Die" (2011)

A mix of "El rey de la montaña", "Vertige" and maybe "Bosque de sombras" (2006) (another title that could perfectly fit here) and with tourist horror diva Melissa George (she was one of the girls of "Turistas").

Other titles that may fit in this category: "Silent Hill" (2006), "House of 1000 Corpses" (2003), "Catacombs" (2007)...
